Haunted places/Ghosts of Bangalore - 1 : Haunted House in St Mark's Road

Friends,

I am back after a break of 1 year. I have plans of writing about quite a few awesome supernatural topics so please stay tuned.

Bangalore is one of India's most distinctive cities. Its status as a IT powerhouse has attracted people from all over the country. Bangalore also has a great amount of history attached to it. Since its founding by KempeGowda to the time of Tippu Sultan, going forward to its use as a military cantonment by the British to being chosen as the capital of Karnataka, Bangalore has seen a lot.  It is no wonder then that Bangalore also has a few haunted places and legends about ghosts.

Let us examine one of them today.

1. Haunted house / mansion in St Marks Rd: Most old timers in the city would name this among their list of haunted places. The funny thing is I have walked past this place like a million times when I was in Bangalore. I did my high school (or PUC) a t St Joseph's College and I walked past this house at least twice a day on my way to Brigade Road to enjoy the sights :)..Thought I did hear some rumors I find it strange now that I was not that curious about it back then. But I always did get a weird feeling when walking past it. Some places just give out that eerie feeling. But was it really haunted back then in 2001 or was this a more recent occurence? Read below and find out.

It is still fresh in my memories. The dilapidated state of the house along with that run down car just sitting there gathering dust over the years. The whole place is in decay and I haven't been there for quite a few years now. Maybe those of you in Bangalore can actually post newer pics or maybe you will tell me that this house was broken down and remodeled long ago.

Anyways here is the legend about it.

The house belonged to two Anglo Indian sisters who were spinsters, Vera Vaz and Dolce Vaz. Dolce Vaz was murdered in this house by an unknown assailant in front of her sister. The legend then continues that the lady was buried in this house. She was 75 when she was killed and her sister was 80. The killer was never caught. The house was then deserted because nobody wants to live in a house like that. And the place was soon deemed haunted.

People claimed to see things, hear noises. A bunch of folks even went in and were attacked by a supernatural force.

But the reality is this murder happened fairly recently. 2002 in fact. The Times of India actually reported the murder.
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2002-09-04/bangalore/27320795_1_elderly-woman-murderer-stab

So all those times when I walked past this place when I was in college (1999-2001), it was actually not deserted. However I have been walking past this house after the murder in 2002 and it still did not make much of a difference to me. The place was just as eerie and rundown before Dolce's murder.

In any case, the strange thing is that there are some articles like statues, furniture and other stuff lying around in the house but nobody has had the courage to go steal them. From time to time, so called ghost hunters (actually groups of students with no better work to do) go here and post about their "experiences".
This one takes the cake.

So what do you think? Is this place really haunted? Or are we witnessing the creation of a ghostly legend that over the next few years will grow to be more frightening.

If you happen to be in Bangalore, please do visit it and let me know. I would appreciate newer pictures of this place.

Footnote: After this murder, the house and its property is under litigation. It can be assumed that poor Dolce was a victim of murder. But with this haunted legend gaining steam, I wonder who would dare to come forward and buy this property. I think builders are one of the most superstitious folks out there. Would you like to buy this place?

  2. well, if you have seen this place recently, there is an isolated square ill looking building that has come up in front of this house. ofcourse most of the house still remains, they have built this new building in a little square space in front. but i have noticed one thing,(i would keep visiting egg factory, a restaurant which is on the road adjacent) each time i would go to the restaurant, the aldrop of the door of that house would be open, and sometimes closed. ofcorz we would laugh about it then, but now after reading your article it is giving me the shivers.

    1. Hey Divya thanks for the latest update. I am in Bangalore now and will soon stop by this place soon and check it out and hopefully will update my blog with the latest pics too.

Yes as I said in the post, this place has a weird feel to it and after learning about its past, its kinda scary. Even if there is no haunting, it surely is a desolate and evil place since the murders too place here.

  5. ok...if this house is haunted...and as some say they went in and being attacked...why is that nobody made an attempt to really find out the truth....today we are in such an advanced age...where we have created many many gadgets, electronic devices..etc..etc....as simple as a hand held scanner which normally all the security guys do at the shopping malls to idntify a bomb threat or the like....if that can do the job.i think there should be something which can measure the intensity of the hauntedness etc...and find out the real thing...i have been on this road many number of times...during my work schedule..and also had taken up a project on st.marks road..and everyday...i had to take a tun just in front of that house....during work..we used to move around that house (on the way back home) as late as 1am and 2am...now...recently i have visited the egg factory too...and had a good look at that house....nothing seems to be changed....i didn't feel anything strange except that the house...which has a huge value in todays real estate market...is still in ruins....there are many houses, hotels, and other buildings around that house...and they are doing their businesses normally...deeply regret that whomsoever it belonged to, today...there is nobody to whom it belongs....i am sure...that place has some old records...which can be traced...and the place be given to whomsoever it belongs too.....it makes sense....

    1. I agree about the part where folks say they saw something. I always keep an open mind and take such things with a pinch of salt. It definitely presents a great case for a thorough investigation. As I said in one of my earlier replies, the place might not be haunted but it has acquired a kind of evil since the murders took place there + the fact that its been left so desolate for these years.

  22. HI All,
I had been to this place on November 8Th 2013, I never know that this place had a background like this or else I would have taken photograph of it. Interestingly things are quite the same till now as explained by many in the blog. I am a part time photographer so you can expect a latest photograph of this place soon. I will visit this place once again and try to capture a panorama photograph of this place.

  23. Me and one of my Office colleagues went there. We took few equipment with us; A Camera, A Video-Cam, an emergency light, 2 long screw-drivers. We shot the whole of the place & took many pictures. We could not feel anything, until we started shooting the room where the lady was killed.
Strangest thing that happened to my friend was that when he was shooting the pics from outside the house, battery was 100%, but as soon as he came insde to take closer shots, the camera said Battery-Low!!!

We then came back and found out strange things in the pics and the video we took. There were huge blots of white spots in the pics which we took at the room where the murder was done. and at few places in the video, there was someone talking or arm-chair crackling sound!

  25. Hi Calvin. My family and I went to this house many times in Nov and Dec one year ago. We went during the day and we went at night. We were not going there to ghost hunt rather we were looking for family heirlooms...treasures to bring home with us. My father grew up in this house. My aunt was the one murdered. The rightful owners are known. We took MANY pictures while we were there and never had any supernatural experience or anything bizarre show up in the pics. The only strange thing we experienced was that a drunk decided to use one of the rooms to phase between passed out and throwing up.....sad that it has come to that - along with stray dogs and homeless people seeking what shelter they can. Thank you for letting me share!

    2. If your family is the right owner of terra vera please apply for a C.B.I investigation of your aunt dolce alice vas's murder in the supreme court of India, you could support your demand of a C.B.I investigation by writing on the letter that 15 years has passed and the Karnataka state government had failed to arrest the killer. And they have mentioned the case as unsolved. Go for a neutral C.B.I investigation and it is my strong belief from the bottom of my heart that it is not too much late . The killer will get arrested and will be punished by Indian law for committing such a heinous and inhuman crime. The chance is still maximum because when he had committed the crime back in 4 September 2002, he was a youth this means he hadn't grown old.

  58. Had the older sister applied to the supreme court of india or high court for a CBI(central Bureau of investigation) investigation, rather than totally depending on the Karnataka police for investigation upto last moment, the dolce vas's murderer would had got arrested a long time ago and would had got punished by the law for doing such a inhuman crime. And the older sister vera mary vas would had lived in that house peacefully after that, without abandoning it. The remaining question is of the promoters who threatened her of dyre consequences if she had not sell them her house in low rates. For that she would had wrote letter to the high or supreme court. And the court would had ordered the Karnataka state government to take action against those promoters .
